Over the next few days the pundits are going to be …well punditing and theories are going to be flying around concerning the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final between Netherlands and Spain that will take place at Soccer City in Johannesburg on 11 July at 20.30 (local time). The showdown at Soccer City will be the Netherlands’ third Final appearance and Spain’s first. So you better buy your red or orange vuvuzelas and get ready for the Final.

We know that Bert van Marwijk’s Oranje boys play a very efficient brand of football that has brought them an unbeaten run of 25 games. And if they win the World Cup final, they will be able to claim the cachet of being only the second team to follow up a 100 per cent record in qualifying by winning each and every game at the final tournament. The only side to do so previously was the legendary Brazil squad of Mexico 1970.

A very intriguing subplot looking ahead to the Netherlands-Spain Final will the battle between Dutch attacking midfielder Wesley Snijder and Spanish hitman David Villa for the adidas Golden Boot. Both the Inter Milan creator and Barcelona’s newly signed forward are on five goals apiece.

Spain

Centre-back Raul Albiol has been ruled out of the last 16 clash with Portugal on Tuesday with sprained ligaments in his right ankle. He fell awkwardly during a training session on Saturday and was carried off the pitch. Xabi Alonso sprained his ankle in Spain’s 2-1 win against Chile and, although it is said to be a minor problem, the Real Madrid midfielder may not start.

Alonso’s possible absence could allow Javi Martinez to start alongside Sergio Busquets in defensive midfield. This will give Xavi more freedom to pull the strings in the attacking midfield department. Fernando Torres will start despite his poor form in the World Cup and David Silva will be on the bench.

Portugal

Midfielder Deco has made a recovery from the hip injury that forced him to miss Portugal’s final Group G game against Brazil. But the former Champions League winner with Barcelona is unlikely to be drafted into the starting line-up by coach Carlos Queiroz as Tiago has done quite well so far.

However, midfielder Danny is a doubt for the Spain game after suffering a bruise on his left thigh. Ruben Amorim also remains a doubt with a thigh problem.

Paulo Ferreira should start at right-back while Pepe is likely to retain his place as the defensive midfielder. Atletico Madrid’s Simao Sabrosa will occupy one wing while Cristiano Ronaldo will be on the other.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

David Villa (Spain)

The newly signed Barcelona player is one of the best strikers in the world – some even suggest that he is the best. Indeed, Villa has been Spain’s best and most consistent player so far in the World Cup, having scored three goals and set up the other, meaning that he has played indispensable roles in all of Spain’s goals scored in the World Cup.

Portugal have a brilliant defensive record but to maintain it they will have to stop Spain’s all-time top goalscorer in the World Cup finals, who is placed ninth in the Castrol Rankings.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)

The Real Madrid superstar has had a modest World Cup campaign so far, having failed to light up the competition as much as he would have liked to. However, Ronaldo came good in the second half against North Korea and was arguably the most threatening player on the pitch against Brazil.

Portugal don’t have a great striker or a prolific goalscorer but on Tuesday evening, Ronaldo, placed second in the Castrol Rankings, will have to ‘invent’ the game and create chances. The former Manchester United star will also be deadly on set-pieces.

PREDICTION

On paper Spain should be the favourites given that they have better quality players and are more coherent as a team. In fact, theoretically Spain are better in every area than Portugal and a win for the European champions is on the cards.

However, Portugal have a very good defensive record and a combative midfield that is not going to let itself get overrun easily by the Spanish armada. Moreover, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Simao on the wings, Portugal are very deadly on the counter-attacks.

The Castrol World Cup match predictor suggests a 63% chance of Spain winning the match while Portugal are given just 37%. However, the match will be closer than those stats suggest and one shouldn’t really be surprised if it goes to penalties.

Keisuke Honda (Japan)

A rising star, Honda’s good form with VVV-Venlo and CSKA Moscow at club level has transferred to the world stage in South Africa. His free-kick against Denmark showcased his finishing ability, while his sublime assist to set up their third was evidence of his sublime skill. For his performance, he was rated as the Goal.com Player Of The Day. A similar display will take them through to the last eight.

PREDICTION

These are two sides who have both performed above expectations thus far at the 2010 World Cup and played some good football, while keeping it tight at the back. Expect a very hard-fought contest that could go either way. Extra time or penalties is a real possibility. I’ll go for an Eastern surprise again, but this match is anyone’s for the taking.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Landon Donovan (USA)

Donovan is one of America’s greatest ever footballers and he showed his mettle against Algeria in their final group game. The 28-year-old scored the winner against the Africans in injury time and led his nation by the hands to the last 16. Donovan can go in and out of games but the former Bayer Leverkusen man has the potential to make great things happen against Ghana.

Asamoah Gyan (Ghana)

The striker looked woeful in front of goal against Germany in their last match but he has been the Black Stars’ most reliable striker so far. Gyan scored against Serbia and against Australia and he will be looking to put pressure on the American defence on Saturday. The 24-year-old is a very good striker indeed and given that the USA don’t particularly look good in defence, Gyan could be the one to send the Americans into a tailspin.

PREDICTION

Both teams have done marvellously to come this far and indeed it is not an easy call to make. The Castrol World Cup match predictor gives the USA a 46% chance of winning the match and Ghana a 28% chance. A draw is put at 26%.

Ghana did look a bit out of their depth against Germany in their last group match while the USA created chance after chance but couldn’t finish them against Algeria. The Americans will have the spirit from their last win and should just about edge past the Black Stars.

Uruguay

Diego Forlan has thus far been one of the players of the tournament. He has led the Uruguayan line with distinction, scoring a couple of goals against South Africa, including one that is a contender for the best of the competition. Seemingly at the peak of his game and comfortable in the Celeste’s set-up, he will take some stopping.

South Korea

Park Chu-Young will be the man primarily charged with breaking down Uruguay’s steely rearguard. The Monaco striker has been in good form during the World Cup to date, despite an own goal against Argentina in the second game. It was his free-kick that ultimately carried the Taeguek Warriors into the knockout stages, and he will be hungry for more goals against the Celeste.

PREDICTION

Uruguay have very much been one of the form teams of the competition to date and look good to seal their passage into the quarter-finals for the first time in 40 years. South Korea certainly won’t make life easy for their South American opponents, but Oscar Tabarez’s side should be a little too stable and have a little too much flair for their opponents.
